Carrie

Chloe Grace Moretz stars in this chilling remake of the Stephen King horror classic. Carrie White (Chloe Grace Moretz) is a sheltered teenager who is bullied by her schoolmates and abused at home by her religious fanatic mother Margaret (Julianne Moore). But Carrie has a remarkable secret - she has telekinetic powers that she can manifest at will. When the bullies at school decide to pull a cruel prank on Carrie at the prom, it leads to horrifying consequences. Stephen King's first published novel, Carrie was originally adapted by director Brian De Palma in 1976 with memorable performances from Sissy Spacek, Piper Laurie and a youthful John Travolta. The classic original is a frightening yet deeply poignant story of a teenager whose supernatural abilities lead to tragedy. And now, the 2013 version promises to introduce the story to a whole new generation. One thing's for certain - you will know her name!

The Hunger Games Catching Fire

A change of rules leads to an even deadlier death match in this blazing sequel to the global blockbuster. Now Snow is determined to regain the upper hand. Since Katniss has become a beacon of hope to the impoverished people of District 12, he begins by deviously manipulating public opinion against her. But he then realises that other winners pose a similar threat in their own districts. But panic and fear gives way to a realisation that their only hope of survival is to work together and travel further into deep space. Philomena

Judi Dench and Steve Coogan star in the moving true story of a woman's epic search for her son. Fifty years ago, naive young Irish girl Philomena Lee (Sophie Kennedy Clark) fell pregnant. This landed her in one of the Catholic Church's notorious Magdalene Laundries as a 'fallen woman'. Her baby boy was subsequently snatched away by nuns and sold to a rich American couple. Today, Philomena (Judi Dench) is a retired nurse who's still desperate to track down her son. Former BBC TV correspondent turned government spin-doctor Martin Sixsmith (Steve Coogan) is sufficiently intrigued to help her. The mismatched duo then embark on a journey that creates a surprising bond between them. Adapted from Sixsmith's book 'The Lost Child of Philomena Lee', this is a charming, touching and unexpectedly funny drama. Captain Phillips

Last Thursday I went to see Captain Phillips.

Tom Hanks stars in the incredible true story of the first US ship to be seized by pirates in 200 years. In 2009, the unarmed US container ship Maersk Alabama is charting a course off the coast of Somalia. On his radar, Captain Richard Phillips (Tom Hanks) observes speedboats heading in their direction. He then launches a well-planned emergency procedure that puts the ship into lockdown while its crew hide. The heavily armed pirates led by Muse (Barkhad Abdi) board the vessel, take Phillips hostage, and flee in a lifeboat. So begins a tense, high stakes stand-off that quickly makes international headlines. This true-life thriller is adapted from Captain Phillips' own book about his experiences by 'The Hunger Games' screenwriter Billy Ray. 'The Bourne Ultimatum' director Paul Greengrass delivers a typically complex, nuanced, politically charged action film that focuses on the two contrasting men at the centre of the unfolding drama.

Sunshine On Leith

Peter Mullan and Jane Horrocks star in a feelgood musical woven from the Proclaimers' uplifting hits. Ally (Kevin Guthrie) and Davy (George MacKay) are two young soldiers who return home to Leith after serving in Afghanistan. Ally goes out with Davy's sister, Liz (Freya Mavor), who introduces her brother to Yvonne (Antonia Thomas). Stephen Greenhorn's acclaimed jukebox stage musical took its title from the second album by Scottish musical heroes The Proclaimers. Their hits drive this moving story about the difficulties of adapting to Civvy Street. Actor-turned-director Dexter Fletcher's big-screen adaptation was shot on location in Edinburgh and Glasgow. Among its stunning set-piece numbers is huge performance of 'I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)' featuring 500 dancers outside the National Gallery of Scotland! This is also producer Andrew Macdonald's first film in Scotland since the legendary 'Trainspotting'.

Rush

Chris Hemsworth puts pedal to the metal in the high-octane story of rival Formula 1 legends James Hunt and Niki Lauda. It's 1976 and Formula 1 motor racing is dominated by two contrasting larger-than-life personalities. Austrian-born Niki Lauda (Daniel Bruhl) is a technically brilliant driver who worked his way methodically through the ranks to claim the number one spot at Ferrari. His rival at McLaren is handsome, charismatic, blond Englishman James Hunt (Chris Hemsworth). Hunt's skill behind the wheel belies a louche playboy image. But this is a sport where vehicles and drivers are pushed to the absolute limit. Death can be just a heartbeat away! Written by Oscar nominated 'The Queen' screenwriter Peter Morgan, 'Rush' is another nail-biting true story of triumph and tragedy from 'Apollo 13' director Ron Howard. The thrilling golden age of Formula 1 is meticulously re-created, while the sporting rivalry is brought brilliantly to life by Daniel Bruhl and 'Thor' star Chris Hemsworth.

Only God Forgives

This Afternoon in Llandudno I have been to see Only God Forgives.

A stylish, visceral gangland vengeance thriller from the director and star of 'Drive'. American fugitive Julian (Ryan Gosling) is hiding out in Bangkok, where he runs a boxing club as a cover for the family drug smuggling business. But his past returns to haunt him after his psychopathic big brother Billy (Tom Burke) murders an under-age prostitute. When Billy is himself killed, the brothers' fearsome mother Crystal (Kristin Scott Thomas) dispatches reluctant, conflicted Julian on a revenge mission. This leads him to deadly, samurai sword-wielding retired cop Chang (Vithaya Pansringarm), who's known as the Angel of Vengeance. Acclaimed 'Drive' director Nicolas Winding Refn gets another memorably brooding performance from Ryan Gosling in this brutal, stylised meditation on vengeance. Pain and Gain

This afternoon in Llandudno I have been to see Pain and Gain.

Mark Wahlberg and Dwayne Johnson play pumped-up kidnappers in this tongue-in-cheek comedy. Bodybuilder Daniel Lugo (Mark Wahlberg) works at the Sun Gym in Miami. When wealthy businessman Victor Kershaw (Tony Shalhoub) turns up at the gym, it gives cash-strapped Lugo an idea. He formulates a risky plan to kidnap Kershaw and extort his money by means of torture. He even enlists the help of recently-released criminal Paul Doyle (Dwayne Johnson). But while the guys' abs may be impressive, their extortion skills aren't - and when the plan goes horribly wrong, Kershaw hires private investigator Du Bois (Ed Harris) to catch his assailants. Based on the true story of the Sun Gym Gang, Pain and Gain sees mega-director Michael Bay taking a completely different direction to his Transformers blockbusters. With entertainingly meat-headed performances from Mark Wahlberg and Dwayne Johnson, this is an outrageous blend of testosterone-fuelled thriller and jet-black comedy.

We're The Millers

Jennifer Aniston plays a stripper in this outrageous comedy about a pot dealer who assembles a fake family. When small time weed dealer David Burke (Jason Sudeikis) is robbed, he finds himself in debt to fearsome supplier Brad (Ed Helms). To wipe the slate clean and avoid being eaten by Brad's new pet orca, David agrees to smuggle a 'smidge' of marijuana over the border from Mexico. He figures the best way to avoid attracting attention during this mission is to recruit a squeaky-clean all-American family. Frances Ha

Tonight I have been to see Frances Ha.

Indie queen Greta Gerwig stars in a warm, funny, perceptive comedy about a woman who's adrift in life. Sparky, klutzy, disorganised 27-year-old Brooklyn girl Frances (Greta Gerwig) describes herself as a dancer, even though she's not very good at it. But life is generally blissful in the apartment she shares with Sophie (Mickey Sumner). Boyfriends have come and gone, but Frances and Sophie have been best friends since college days. Now, however, Sophie is ready to move on and get serious about her career and current beau, Patch (Patrick Huesinger). Caught in something of a time warp, Frances begins to drift. Real-life couple Greta Gerwig and 'The Squid and the Whale' director Noah Baumbach previously worked together on 'Greenberg' and co-wrote the script for 'Frances Ha'. It's superbly photographed in monochrome as a homage to Woody Allen's classic, 'Manhattan'. It also boasts the first major film role for Sting's daughter, Mickey Sumner.

Now You See Me

Last Thursday I went to see Now You See Me.

Four brilliant illusionists use their talents to rob banks in this mind-bending thriller. Meet the self-styled Four Horsemen. Henley (Isla Fisher), Merritt (Woody Harrelson), Michael (Jesse Eisenberg) and Jack (Dave Franco) are stage magicians with a penchant for breathtaking illusions during spectacular stage shows. But there's more to their act than just entertainment. At the climax of their performance in Las Vegas, they teleport an audience member into a bank to steal $140m. This is then showered over the audience as compensation for the bankers' misdeeds. Naturally, these Robin Hood-style antics don't go down too well with bank manager Arthur Tressler (Michael Caine). But then the mysterious Thaddeus Bradley (Morgan Freeman) tells him that the robbery was just a distraction while the real trick was set up! Nothing is quite what it seems as the ingenious heist caper meets the brain-melting illusionist drama in 'The Transporter' director Louis Leterrier's gripping thriller.

Last Tuesday I went to see Star Trek Into Darkness.

Kirk, Spock and the rest of the Enterprise crew are back in a spectacular new intergalactic adventure! Back in 2009 J.J. Marvel's armour-plated icon returns for the thrilling third instalment in the blockbusting franchise. Everyone's favourite genius billionaire playboy philanthropist Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) is back! The flippant hero with a heart of gold now faces his greatest threat yet. It arrives in the form of deadly master-criminal The Mandarin (Ben Kingsley) - a villain who sets about destroying Stark's entire world. Out on his own, Stark must rely on ingenuity to defeat his arch-nemesis whilst fighting to protect the love of his life, Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow). But does he have the mettle to survive The Mandarin's plan and rise up as Iron Man once more? Following the gigantic success of the previous two Iron Man movies and Avengers Assemble, expectations for this third entry are soaring higher than the hot-rod hero himself. Side Effects

Tonight I have been to see Side Effects.

A troubled young woman is prescribed a mysterious new drug in this compelling drama from director Steven Soderbergh. Emily (Rooney Mara) is plagued by irrational anxieties. Her emotional and psychological problems are exacerbated by the imminent release of her husband Martin (Channing Tatum) from prison. On the advice of her psychiatrist Jonathan (Jude Law), Emily is prescribed a new drug with the aim of keeping her anxiety under control. Initially, the drug seems to do the trick and invests Emily with a sense of clarity that helps to rekindle the spark in her marriage - until she's suddenly implicated in a shocking death. The finger of blame points directly at Emily, but does the wider issue in fact stem from the medication she is using? Soon, everyone is caught in an escalating vortex of lies and deceit. Cloud Atlas

Yesterday in Llandudno I went to see Cloud Atlas.

This sweeping drama examines the connection between the lives of several characters across the centuries. Stretching across a vast expanse of time, Cloud Atlas is a hugely ambitious epic about the spiritual link between people from different eras. The film interweaves six different stories ranging from the 19th century to the distant future, each one forming part of a glorious tapestry of human existence. Beginning in 1849 with an American lawyer who is travelling across the South Pacific Ocean, the narrative then encompasses a composer in the 1930s, a journalist in the 1970s, an author in 2012, a clone bred for a life of servitude in 22nd century Korea, and a tribesman living in post-apocalyptic Hawaii. Adapted from David Mitchell's extraordinary novel by Tom Tykwer and Matrix filmmakers Lana and Andy Wachowski, this kaleidoscopic, visually dazzling feast features a superb cast including Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Hugh Grant and Jim Broadbent.

Broken City

Today in Llandudno I have seen Broken City.

Sparks fly between Hollywood heavyweights Mark Wahlberg and Russell Crowe in this riveting thriller. Disgraced ex-cop turned private detective Billy Taggart (Mark Wahlberg) is thrown a lifeline. The Mayor of New York City Nicholas Hostetler (Russell Crowe) is set on cleaning up the apparently 'broken' city and hires the former lawman to act as his eyes on the ground. But events take an unexpected turn when Billy is hired to trail Hostetler's glamorous wife Emily (Catherine Zeta-Jones) and capture evidence of her rumoured infidelity. A seemingly straightforward assignment soon turns out to be anything but, as Billy uncovers shocking scandal. Soon he's double-crossed and betrayed by Hostetler, the most powerful man in the city. Now streetwise Billy is out for justice! A-list stars Mark Wahlberg and Russell Crowe bring their commanding talents to this riveting mano-a-mano thriller, one that plunges audiences into a world where loyalty and trust are built on corrupt foundations.

Safe Haven

Today in Llandudno I have been to see Safe Haven.

This deeply romantic drama centres on a woman who flees her troubled past to start a new life in a small American town. Katie (Julianne Hough) has recently arrived in the close-knit community of Southport, prompting questions among the locals. As they strive to know where she came from, Katie appears resistant to forming emotional ties with anyone. That is until she meets Alex (Josh Duhamel), a widowed storeowner with two children. The pair eventually form a connection and begin a passionate affair - but Katie is haunted by a dark secret that she finds impossible to truly escape from. Soon, she senses that danger is starting to encroach on her life in Southport and her newfound romance comes under threat. This latest adaptation of a Nicholas Sparks novel features the author's winning mixture of tender intimacy and swooning romance, this time infused with a suspenseful edge as the shocking details of Katie's past come to light.

Warm Bodies

Today in Llandudno I have been to see Warm Bodies.

Can zombies fall in love? That's the irresistible question at the heart of this quirky comedy horror. Based on the debut novel by Isaac Marion, Warm Bodies is the darkly comic story of romance between two complete opposites. In the wake of a devastating zombie apocalypse, America is now populated with hordes of the undead. Among them is R (Nicholas Hoult). Incapable of communicating beyond a few basic grunts and groans, R is lonely and simply wants to connect with somebody - a tricky proposition given his penchant for human flesh! But then he encounters human survivor Julie (Teresa Palmer), who sets his heart pounding - literally. R immediately falls in love with Julie and in the process starts to become more human. If only he could convey this to her father General Grigio (John Malkovich) who's intent on blasting all walking corpses on sight. R's change of heart sets in motion a brilliantly funny spin on the zombie movie, in which love really does conquer all.

Les Miserables

Today in Llandudno I have been to see Les Miserables.

A ground-breaking film adaptation of the global hit stage musical, with an all-star cast singing their parts live. After serving a long prison sentence for a petty crime, Jean Valjean (Hugh Jackman) becomes a noble force for good. But he reckons without Inspector Javert (Russell Crowe), the policeman who pursues him obsessively for breaking his parole. Set against the tumultuous backdrop of French revolutionary history, Victor Hugo's classic 1862 novel has been adapted for stage and screen many times. But no version is better loved than the stage musical, which continues to break records in its 27th year. In bringing this powerful story of broken dreams and unrequited love to the screen, 'The King's Speech' director Tom Hooper decided to have the performers sing live rather than miming to a recording. The result is a spectacular musical epic of extraordinary immediacy. Its superlative cast also includes Anne Hathaway, Amanda Seyfried, Helena Bonham Carter and Sacha Baron Cohen.

Song For Marion

Tonight I have been to see Song For Marion.

Terence Stamp and Vanessa Redgrave star in this tender comedy drama. Crotchety Arthur (Terence Stamp) is married to Marion (Vanessa Redgrave). Much loved by her husband, Marion is tragically dying of cancer and wants to get the maximum enjoyment out of life. She sings in the local seniors chorus named The OAPZ - so named because the conductor Elizabeth (Gemma Arterton) wants the chorus to sound 'street'. Elizabeth's aim is to introduce the pensioners to contemporary music from artists like Gnarls Barkley as they prepare for an important Choir of the Year competition. But when Marion is stricken by her illness and unable to participate, it falls to grumpy Arthur to step up to the plate. Will he be able to do his beloved wife proud? The stage is set for a funny and moving story of reconciliation and the redemptive power of music, featuring the unforgettable image of elderly pensioners crooning Ace of Spades by Motorhead!
