Frances Ha

Tonight I have been to see Frances Ha.

Indie queen Greta Gerwig stars in a warm, funny, perceptive comedy about a woman who's adrift in life. Sparky, klutzy, disorganised 27-year-old Brooklyn girl Frances (Greta Gerwig) describes herself as a dancer, even though she's not very good at it. But life is generally blissful in the apartment she shares with Sophie (Mickey Sumner). Boyfriends have come and gone, but Frances and Sophie have been best friends since college days. Now, however, Sophie is ready to move on and get serious about her career and current beau, Patch (Patrick Huesinger). Caught in something of a time warp, Frances begins to drift. Real-life couple Greta Gerwig and 'The Squid and the Whale' director Noah Baumbach previously worked together on 'Greenberg' and co-wrote the script for 'Frances Ha'. It's superbly photographed in monochrome as a homage to Woody Allen's classic, 'Manhattan'. It also boasts the first major film role for Sting's daughter, Mickey Sumner.

The Worlds End

Last Tuesday I went to see The Worlds End.

The gang behind Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz reunite for the final entry in their hilarious 'Three Flavours Cornetto' trilogy! When they were younger, an intrepid group of friends attempted a pub-crawl to end them all. Twenty years later, Gary King (Pegg) reunites the group in an attempt to stage the same drinking marathon again. The goal, as before, is to reach the fabled pub The World's End. But soon the hard-drinking mates are unexpectedly plunged into a fight for the survival of all mankind! The World's End is the latest collaboration between director Edgar Wright, screenwriter/star Simon Pegg and co-star Nick Frost following Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz. Now it's time for last orders as their hit film trilogy comes to a close. Martin Freeman, Paddy Considine and Eddie Marsan co-star in what promises to be another effortless laugh-riot from the 'fried gold' comedy team!

Now You See Me

Last Thursday I went to see Now You See Me.

Four brilliant illusionists use their talents to rob banks in this mind-bending thriller. Meet the self-styled Four Horsemen. Henley (Isla Fisher), Merritt (Woody Harrelson), Michael (Jesse Eisenberg) and Jack (Dave Franco) are stage magicians with a penchant for breathtaking illusions during spectacular stage shows. But there's more to their act than just entertainment. At the climax of their performance in Las Vegas, they teleport an audience member into a bank to steal $140m. This is then showered over the audience as compensation for the bankers' misdeeds. Naturally, these Robin Hood-style antics don't go down too well with bank manager Arthur Tressler (Michael Caine). But then the mysterious Thaddeus Bradley (Morgan Freeman) tells him that the robbery was just a distraction while the real trick was set up! Nothing is quite what it seems as the ingenious heist caper meets the brain-melting illusionist drama in 'The Transporter' director Louis Leterrier's gripping thriller.

This Is The End

Last Thursday I went to see This Is The End

The apocalypse strikes during a party at James Franco's house in this outrageously raunchy comedy! James Franco is throwing a party at his luxury home for all his A-list pals. The cream of young Hollywood is there, including Paul Rudd, Seth Rogen, Jonah Hill, Jason Segel, Jay Baruchel, Michael Cera, Christopher Mintz-Plasse and Danny McBride. But while the debauchery escalates, something ominous is happening outside. The ground starts to shake. A giant hole opens up in the lawn. People are sucked into the sky by mysterious lights. And monsters are on the loose! Now the six surviving actors struggle to deal with a real apocalypse. And then Emma Watson shows up, completely trashing her good girl image! Expanded by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg from their own short film, this mind-blowing comedy gives its amazing cast an opportunity to play hilariously exaggerated versions of themselves. You'll be astonished at how horribly some of them die!

The Purge

Tonight I have been to see The Purge.

One family faces terror on a night when all crime is legal in this white knuckle ride of a sci-fi thriller. In the New America of the future, crime is at an all-time low. But this achievement has come at a price. Each year, citizens are permitted to let off steam for one night only in a cathartic orgy of criminality called The Purge. Anything goes - even murder! - as all emergency services are suspended for 12 hours. In their luxury gated community, the Sandin family prepare for the annual lockdown. Dad James (Ethan Hawke) assures his wife Mary (Lena Headey) and kids that everything will be OK. But then a stranger finds his way into their home, hotly pursued by a sinister masked mob. From the people who gave us 'Assault on Precinct 13' and the 'Paranormal Activity' films, this is a thrill-packed vision of a horrifying future.

The Audience

Tonight I have been to see The Audience.

Helen Mirren reprises her Oscar-winning role as Queen Elizabeth II in this eagerly awaited National Theatre production Following its sold-out West End run, Stephen Daldry's The Audience is broadcast live in Cineworld. The acclaimed production is now the proud winner of 2 Olivier Awards - Helen Mirren for Best Actress and Richard McCabe for Best Supporting Actor. Written by Peter Morgan, screenwriter of The Queen, and broadcast as part of National Theatre Live, The Audience takes us behind the doors of Buckingham Palace - into a series of meetings like no other in British society. During her sixty-year reign, Elizabeth II has granted a special weekly audience to each of her twelve Prime Ministers. Both parties have agreed never to repeat what is said. Now, this fascinating blend of fact and fiction imagines the meetings that have taken place between the various Downing Street incumbents and the Queen. A uniquely intimate speculation about the dialogue that occurs between our heads of state, this is an unmissable opportunity to see the regal Helen Mirren return to the role that secured her the Academy Award.
