The Croods

This afternoon I have been to see The Croods.

The makers of How to Train Your Dragon present a spectacular prehistoric comedy adventure! The Croods are a loveable Stone-Age family. Headed by Dad Grug (Nicholas Cage), they include wife Ugga (Catherine Keener) and eldest daughter Eep (Emma Stone). Grug has only one rule for his brood - never venture outside their cave! But it all gets too much for Eep - whose curiosity gets the better of her. She makes the decision to explore outside the cave - just as a massive earthquake hits. When the dust settles, the family are stunned to discover that their whole world has been transformed! Now Grug must seek out a new home for his family in this strange and unfamiliar environment. And things are complicated even further when Eep takes a liking to nomad Guy (Ryan Reynolds). Filled with memorable characters, this energetic family treat takes viewers young and old on an exciting adventure towards new horizons.

Iron Man 3

This afternoon I have been to see Iron Man 3

Marvel's armour-plated icon returns for the thrilling third instalment in the blockbusting franchise. Everyone's favourite genius billionaire playboy philanthropist Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) is back! The flippant hero with a heart of gold now faces his greatest threat yet. It arrives in the form of deadly master-criminal The Mandarin (Ben Kingsley) - a villain who sets about destroying Stark's entire world. Out on his own, Stark must rely on ingenuity to defeat his arch-nemesis whilst fighting to protect the love of his life, Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow). But does he have the mettle to survive The Mandarin's plan and rise up as Iron Man once more? Following the gigantic success of the previous two Iron Man movies and Avengers Assemble, expectations for this third entry are soaring higher than the hot-rod hero himself. Famed Lethal Weapon writer Shane Black takes over as director for what promises to be Iron Man's most thrilling, emotional and action-packed ride yet.

Tonight at Bolton Cineworld I have been to see The Host.

Saoirse Ronan stars in this epic love-story adapted from Twilight author Stephenie Meyer's best-selling novel. In the future, Earth has been overtaken by a parasitic race of aliens called Souls, who have possessed the minds of nearly every human on the planet. Melanie Stryder (Saoirse Ronan) is one of the last remaining human survivors. Whilst out scavenging for food, she comes into contact with fellow survivor Jared (Max Irons), with whom she falls in love. However when Melanie is captured by the Souls, she is taken over by an alien presence called Wanderer. The invaders aim to access her memories and discover where the survivors are hiding. However, Melanie's soul unexpectedly remains active within the host body, forming an unexpected connection between human and alien. Author Stephenie Meyer co-produces this highly anticipated adaptation of her hit novel. The Host is set to be the next teen-movie sensation following the blockbusting success of the Twilight franchise.

Side Effects

Tonight I have been to see Side Effects.

A troubled young woman is prescribed a mysterious new drug in this compelling drama from director Steven Soderbergh. Emily (Rooney Mara) is plagued by irrational anxieties. Her emotional and psychological problems are exacerbated by the imminent release of her husband Martin (Channing Tatum) from prison. On the advice of her psychiatrist Jonathan (Jude Law), Emily is prescribed a new drug with the aim of keeping her anxiety under control. Initially, the drug seems to do the trick and invests Emily with a sense of clarity that helps to rekindle the spark in her marriage - until she's suddenly implicated in a shocking death. The finger of blame points directly at Emily, but does the wider issue in fact stem from the medication she is using? Soon, everyone is caught in an escalating vortex of lies and deceit. Soderbergh's provocative new film is a sophisticated, engrossing look at a highly controversial subject, underscored with the director's characteristic intelligence.
